Today marks day 8 of the federal government shutdown. Kurt McMillen, Interim Associate Vice Chancellor for Research Administration and Interim Director for Research and Sponsored Programs, shared the message below with members of the UW–Madison research community.

We wanted to share a brief update and point you to a few resources as we continue navigating the ongoing federal government shutdown, among other federal changes.
The OVCR and VCFA shared a campuswide message last week with general updates and context, which can be found here: Federal Shutdown Update – UW–Madison News
In addition, RSP continues to maintain our dedicated shutdown page: RSP Federal Shutdown Guidance. This page is being updated regularly with agency-specific information about which systems and services remain online, and which are impacted. We’re monitoring developments closely and will post updates as new guidance becomes available.
To date, most federal agencies have been relatively quiet in terms of new actions. One positive development is that many payment management systems remain online. RSP continues to submit invoices and drawdown requests on our normal cadence to pursue payment for grant-related expenditures as we can. As mentioned in prior updates, we were successful in completing several drawdowns of federal funds before the shutdown, which helped put us in a better position heading into the shutdown.
We know you may be experiencing uncertainty due to this situation, but we’ll continue to monitor and be in touch as things unfold. Please stay tuned for further updates from RSP, the Office of Legal Affairs, and Federal Relations as the situation evolves. As a reminder, campus continues to share information on the Federal Relations page: Federal Relations – Federal Updates.
If you or your teams encounter specific issues or have questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re all in this together and will continue to coordinate closely across campus.
