The Association of American Universities and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce have joined together in a lawsuit challenging the $100,000 petition fee employers are required to pay for employees working with an H-1B visa.

Amid reports of plans to terminate over 600 U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) funding awards, including $12 million in approved funding to Universities of Wisconsin, Governor Evers send a note to DOE Secretary Chris Wright to highlight the importance and impact of these energy investments for Wisconsinites.

Today marks day 8 of the federal government shutdown. Kurt McMillen, Interim Associate Vice Chancellor for Research Administration and Interim Director for Research and Sponsored Programs, shared a message below with the UW–Madison research community. 

As the federal government shutdown continues, the UW–Madison community should be aware of the potential impact on immigration processes and international travel. 

The Department of Education reaffirmed that, at this time, the federal government shutdown will have minimal impacts on Federal Student Aid (FSA).

Campus leaders are monitoring developments and potential impacts and will continue to communicate with the community and shared governance.

Campus leadership, including University Relations, Research and Sponsored Programs (RSP) in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration, and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs, began preparing for the possibility several weeks ago, amid other work on federal updates. 

UW–Madison is aware of the Presidential Proclamation “Restriction on Entry of Certain Nonimmigrant Workers,” issued Friday, September 19, 2025. This proclamation outlines new rules governing the H-1B visa program. The Office of International Faculty and Staff Services communicated with affected employees over the weekend and continues to monitor the situation closely.
