Federal shutdown ends

By a 222-209 vote in the House of Representatives, a continuing resolution (CR) to fund the government through January 30, 2026, has passed Congress. President Trump signed the bill early Thursday morning.

The resolution has the effect of reopening the government, authorizing back pay for all furloughed federal employees and reversing the layoffs of federal workers enacted during the shutdown.

The shutdown, which began on October 1, lasted for 43 days and was the longest ever shutdown event.
University operations were largely uninterrupted by the shutdown.

UW-Madison will continue to post other federal updates on the page going forward.

Additional questions about the shutdown or other federal issues can be directed to the University Relations team.
