Instructor guidance on government agency contacts

This message was sent to all faculty and instructional academic staff on January 30, 2025 and is intended for those teaching this spring.

Dear Instructional Colleagues,

During federal administration transitions, there are changes that may affect the university in various ways. Campus leadership, our Congressional Affairs team, and others are closely monitoring the ongoing transition for developments that may affect UW–Madison students, faculty, and staff as well as our educational, research and outreach missions.

My office has received some questions about instructors’ rights and responsibilities in the context of federal immigration actions. At this time, UW–Madison is not aware of any forthcoming action on campus. However, I want to ensure you are aware of university guidance for what to do if you are contacted by or come into contact with someone representing a government agency. This includes guidance that employees contact the UW–Madison Office of Legal Affairs immediately about any non-routine requests for information or site visits by government agencies.

I also encourage you to periodically check the latest federal updates and news from the UW–Madison Office of Federal Relations. If you have questions related to instruction, please reach out to your school/college academic associate dean or email vptl@provost.wisc.edu. We will continue to work to ensure you receive timely, accurate information, and support.

Sincerely,

John
